Looks I Love: 2018 American Music Awards

When I think of the American Music Awards, I think fun and bold and a little less casual than other awards shows. This year there were a lot of dresses/gowns proving my previous statement to be slightly wrong, but you know I love when today’s hottest stars step out on the red carpet. So without further ado, here are a few of my favorite looks:

Leighton Meester

The former Gossip Girl star stepped onto the red carpet in a black and white Sonia Rykiel gown. I swear Blair Waldorf would be proud. She pulled back her hair to show off the halter neckline and paired the velour number with a black clutch. Amber Heard

Amber Heard has had a busy few weeks promoting the indie film Her Smell as well as the much anticipated DC movie, Aquaman. She looked like royalty in a black tulle Ralph & Russo Couture dress. Carrie Underwood

The country music superstar looked so beautiful walking the carpet, as she made her first appearance after announcing her pregnancy. She was all smiles in a black Steven Khalil gown with gold embellishments. Kelsea Ballerini

Out of all the looks on this list, I think this one fit the AMAs perfectly. To me, the AMAs are fun and flirty and while gowns are beautiful, this little dress was perfect for the young country singer. Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez was definitely a hottie in a hot pink dress by Georges Chakra. The gown from his Fall/Winter 2018-2019 line features a long cape as well as a black belt to hold it together. And J. Lo held it down looking as fierce as ever. Dua Lipa

The English pop star is making waves and records everywhere! Before taking the stage to perform “One Kiss” and “Electricity”, Dua Lipa was a vision in white on the red carpet with a mermaid style gown by Giambattista Valli. Vanessa Hudgens

One of my favorites, Vanessa Hudgens, looked pretty in pink with a Cushnie dress. The rose colored dress came straight from the runway from the Spring 2019 collection. Instead of going with some long locks, the fashionista went with a short bob and made sure to show off the low-cut neckline. The Men

Rami Malek will soon be seen as Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody and tonight he looked great in a Givenchy suit.

Thomas Rhett was a looker in a royal blue fitted suit.

The Couples

Cardi B & Offset

The married couple walked the red carpet in Dolce & Gabbana. Cardi B showed off so much personality in the floral gown, while Offset stepped back and let his lady steal the show.

G-Eazy & Halsey

I will always love these two together. Both G-Eazy and Halsey (in a Redemption dress) are always so stylish on the red carpet solo, but when they’re together it’s a whole other level. They are goals.

Now Watching: You 1×3 | “Maybe” | Recap

Last week on You, Joe went on his first date with Beck and finally got rid of the man in the middle, Benji. Joe doesn’t realize that he’s not good enough for Beck either, especially considering the circumstances.

Things between Joe and Beck are going smoothly as they walk hand in hand getting to know each other. Beck confesses her forever movie is Pretty In Pink and Joe eats it up during his inner monologue – typical. When Beck asks about his ex Candice, he has the perfect answer. Now I really want to know. His inner monologue continues as he watches Beck walk to her apartment and he remembers he has to get rid of the body he left in the bookstore basement.

He’s still keeping appearances on social media to make it seem that Benji is just partying hard and everyone believes it. But other than that, Joe has no idea what he’s doing. He can’t just Google it. He has to be smart about it, but his stomach can’t handle it.

Beck meets with her girlfriends later in the day recapping her new TA position and her Tinder hookup from the night before. Little does she know, Joe is sitting at the bar eavesdropping. “Joe’s still a maybe,” she says out loud, while Peach rolls her eyes and Joe stresses TF out. Both Joe and Peach don’t want to see Beck hooking up with other people. But Joe still watches from across the street as Beck bangs the barista.

The Tinder news is the push Joe needs to finally get the guts to get rid of Benjie. But it’s said when he gets young Paco to get a few items: potassium nitrate, six rolls of duct tape, fire starter, twine, burlap, wood stamps, tarp, and potting soil. Science project?

While Paco gets the stuff, Joe takes the time to go on a shopping spree with Beck. She thinks he has such perfect timing. Joe almost slips up again when he states that her bedroom isn’t big enough to fit a king sized bed. But again, he’s quick on his feet. And quick to go down. They have a moment on a bed in a shop as Beck feels unremarkable which leads to a make out sesh, that is quickly shot down when they are almost caught having oral sex in public. Beck’s not in the mood and Joe stops thinking about it when the electricity goes down at the bookstore.

It’s time for Joe to finally suck it up and get rid of the body. But not before heading to Beck’s to help with her new bed. Beck then reveals why she didn’t enjoy that public display of affection. She likes Joe…actually likes him. And I hate the fact that I think this scene is cute. Joe gets Beck to open up and finally hears her story about her Dad and his red ladle. The red ladle symbolizes happy times with her father, not the perverted story Benji had up his sleeve.

Things start to get heated, but Peach has perfect timing with some bladder issues, showing up unannounced. Joe drives them to the ER, but Peach can’t stand the smell. Makes sense considering there is a dead body. Later on, Peach recovers at the hospital and Beck thinks it’s the right time to ask her what she thinks about Joe. She does not approve, especially due to his financial situation. That’s shallow, but we all know Peach just loves Beck.

As Joe returns home to finish his job, he’s met by the police and Paco’s step dad, Ron. He found the list, but Joe was prepared with a secret garden. Ron explains that he was a parole office and he has a bad feeling about Joe, but only proves that his relationship with his girlfriend’s son is a bit estranged as he yells at Paco.

Joe FINALLY gets some time to rid the world of Benji, but Beck decides to call to continue their little bed party. Unfortunately, he’s a little too distracted especially when two people are walking in the woods at night. The pressure gets to him and he has a little word vomit, practically yelling at Beck for giving him mixed signals. He hangs up in a rush, sets the body on fire and invites the hikers to join his bonfire. Lucky for him, they decline.

Joe’s a little heartbroken when Beck ignores his calls. But she had better things to worry about like her poem piece for her TA workshop, which she didn’t even get a chance to read. Beck was then inspired to open up again. “If i’m sending mixed messages, it’s because I don’t know who I am, so how am I supposed to know what I want?,” Beck confesses. Same, Beck, same. Then she goes on a spiel about not knowing anything about Joe or his friends. He’s so willing to let her in on who Joe is, he invites her to the downstairs basement. And I’m screaming at Beck to not go down there!

The mysterious bookkeeper explains what they keep in the basement and I’m having deja vu considering this is the same exact thing he said to Paco. I’m sure he’s going to keep out the fact that he also keeps dead bodies.  He may even have “Ozma of Oz” down there, which Peach later notices is missing. Beck deletes Tinder and all is well in the Joe/Beck world, until Joe finishes in less than 15 seconds.

How is this show so funny, cute, thrilling, and disturbing at the same time?

Now Watching: You “Pilot” | A Recap

When you put three actors from three of my favorite shows ever, you better believe I’ll be watching. And with the tagline, “Not everyone wants to be followed,” one is lead to believe this is Gossip Girl x 100, which I am 100% okay with.

The series starts with a voice over by Joe (Penn Badgley) and I got major Gossip Girl vibes. Here Joe is, watching and recounting a girl’s every move right up until she approaches him. It’s creepy if you ask me, especially as he analyzes everything about her. You see, Joe’s a literary type. He’s a bookstore manager and seems to read people that he does books. When Joe and Beck (Elizabeth Lail) first interact, it’s oddly cute because they connect on the fact that people suck. Let’s face it…people are disappointing.  But as a viewer, the moment is ruined when Joe starts having pervy thoughts.

As Beck smiles and turns to leave the bookstore, Joe can’t keep his thoughts at bay. He feels like he needs to protect her from the world at all costs, but mainly from getting her heart broken like he did. How does he start? He Googles her. People do it all the time. But we all know Joe may go a little too far. “And there you were, every account set to public. You want to be seen, heard…known. Of course, I obliged,” Joe says to himself as a matter of fact. As Joe finds himself outside of Beck’s home staring at her in her towel through the window, I realize he’s that character that reminds us all to put all of our social media on private.

Joe memorizes Beck’s schedule, and I’m wondering when he’s going to “accidentally” run into her and have another so-called cute meeting. He even shows up at the bar where her and her friends celebrate a birthday. He hates them because they’re rich, snobby brats, especially that Peach (Shay Mitchell) – Beck’s nothing like them. “Your social media is a liar. It says you’re a happy go-lucky dilettante. But underneath it all, you seem like the genuine article,” Joe has a way of words. But when he gets jealous of booty call Benji, the on/off boyfriend, it’s a bit alarming. Benji leaves Beck unsatisfied. Moral of the story? Beck needs curtains. Ultimately, Joe needs to stop masturbating to Beck masturbating through the window.

Now, Joe doesn’t seem to have many friends, just like “Lonely boy”. But he seems to take on a big brother role for one of his neighbors’ child, Paco. It’s almost as if he wants to mold Paco to grow up just like him. It’s almost endearing. But when he brings up chivalry, I’m not sure Joe really knows what that is considering how he’s been stalking Beck. I almost spit out my water at the fact that Paco’s alcoholic stepfather sees right through Joe, calling him a freak.

The little interaction with the stepfather triggers something in Joe. He takes the stalking one notch higher, reporting a gas leak and simply walking in like it’s nothing. While Beck meets with her Professor, Joe goes directly to Beck’s laptop to get more dirt. Much to Joe’s dismay, Beck comes home earlier than expected and finds himself hiding in the shower. Luckily, Beck’s friends have perfect timing.

Off to Greenpoint we go! Beck has finally decided to participate in open mic night and let’s just say it was a train wreck. Her friends showed up for support, but hate the fact that they’re even there (Peach is a far cry from Shay Mitchell’s PLL character). Even Joe felt so bad, he had to leave. But fate brings the two together in a strange way. As Joe waits for his train, Beck and the drunk mess that she is, shows up too. In a flash, Beck falls over into the train tracks and Joe finally stops lurking in the shadows and becomes her knight in shining armor. But something tells me, this is exactly what Joe wanted.

As Beck sobers up she realizes how familiar Joe is. “I don’t want to sound like a stalker, but I think I know you,” she says, while I internally scream, “he’s the stalker!” Joe hails for a taxi and the naive Beck offers that he gets in on the ride. As Joe listens to Beck talk, we all know he already knows everything about her. Joe makes a rookie mistake when he mentions her poetry, but is quick enough to generalize that every young writer in New York writes poetry. Smooth, Joe, smooth.

Joe finally asks for Beck’s number as he drops her off at her apartment into Benji’s arms. But apparently she lost her phone at the subway, so email is the best communication. That doesn’t make sense because we saw she grabbed her phone, but she wasn’t sober enough to realize that and sadly, Joe just got to it first. As he leaves, he comes to a conclusion: Benji is not worthy of Beck’s time and he’s on a mission to make sure no more time is wasted.

And now comes the end of the Pilot episode? Remember when I mentioned that Joe and Paco’s relationship is a bit endearing? I’m not sure this relationship should continue. As Joe cheers the young boy up and shows him how to mend a ruined book spine in the private downstairs dungeon of the bookstore, he seems to reveal his plan for Benji. Lure him downstairs and hit him over the head with the right force, just like the spine of a book. And he succeeds. If only Benji got his head out of his ass, he’d realize that Joe is the guy that dropped off his girlfriend the other day. Serves him right, I guess. Joe has his chance and takes it, by asking Beck out via email of course.

TLDR version:

Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. Boy stalks girl. Boy saves girl from train. Boy kidnaps girl’s on/off boyfriend and hits him over the head. Boy scores a date with girl.

Spring Cleaning: 5 things that should be on your to-do list

Spring officially hit us last month and summer is a little over 2 months away, so that means it’s time to do some spring cleaning to prepare for the upcoming months! Most of the time, I really have no idea where to start but I find the following is a great guideline:

Sort out your clothes. With winter behind us and summer coming up on the horizon, it’s time to go through your piles of clothes sitting in your closet or on the floor. You don’t need your sweaters, large coats, thermals, scarves, etc.. Invest in a storage bin and set these clothes aside. If you’re like me and have empty luggage sitting in your closet, use that! It’ll take up the same space, but now you’ll have your winter clothes set aside for later on this year. While you’re putting away your winter clothes, look for clothes you don’t wear any longer. As your style evolves, the number of clothing items you have will most likely grow. I may not follow my own advice because I’m a hoarder, but you have to remember: you’re not going to wear that crop top anymore so donate it, sell it, or send it to your cousin(s) overseas and hope someone fits it.

Shred your old paperwork and junk mail. Remember when I said I was a hoarder? Well i’m much worse with paper and junk mail. But I’m definitely not alone. I was returning a somewhat pricey storage bin and the cashier lady went on a little rant about using storage bins for her old papers. She even found something from 10 years ago. Unless the paperwork can be used as evidence for something later on down the road, get rid of it. If you’re too lazy to shred your papers yourself, look for local shredding events or companies that will do it for a little fee. And don’t forget to sign up for paperless billing.

Manage your monthly bills. Obviously, this is something you should always pay attention to, but if it’s not something you are currently doing, now is a good time to start. After all, you gotta save up for that summer vacation you’ve been pining after. Take a look at your regular monthly expenses and weed out what you don’t need or use. For example, I wasn’t using my Netflix subscription, but I kept paying for it. It’s not hard to resubscribe so when I’m ready to binge watch some TV, I just sign up through the app for a month or so. Also, look at the data usage with your wireless company. 80% of the time I am on wi-fi at home or at work, so I went from an unlimited data plan to a 2 GB data plan. Verizon also has a safety mode so when I go over 2GB, I just get slower data speeds or I can choose to add more. Stop spending on things you aren’t using.

Clean out your phone. If you don’t clean your phone and open up your storage, that can have a great effect on your mobile device’s performance and speed. Plus, i’m sure you don’t want that dreaded “Not enough storage” message when you’re trying to take a selfie with your favorite actor at your local grocery store. Transfer your photos onto a USB/external drive or upload them to the cloud (but make sure you keep it clean if you know what I mean). Make room for new pictures from your upcoming trip. Delete apps that you aren’t using anymore. That includes games – you stopped trying to beat every level of Candy Crush a long time ago. And finally clear your mobile browser history for obvious reasons.

Clean/organize your space. This should be your top priority. There are days when you just grab something and instead of putting it back where you got it, you throw it somewhere out of the ordinary. Stop doing that! Whether it’s at work or at home, take a few minutes and envision how you want things to be organized and then take baby steps. You don’t have to finish everything in one day. I like to start with one section and once that’s done, move on. Make lists and reminders if you need to. Just like organizing your clothes, figure out what you need and don’t need. Keep a pile for trash and recycle if needed.  Oh, and don’t forget to clean out your refrigerator. That sour cream expired last year.

Looks I Love: 90th Academy Awards

Tonight marked the 90th year of the Academy Awards also known as the 2018 Oscars. The ceremony took place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles’ iconic Hollywood and Highland Center, across the street and a few doors down from the 1st ceremony’s location back in 1929, The Roosevelt Theater.

90 years of film was celebrated tonight and I loved all of the montages of movies through the years. However, if I were to be honest, out of this year’s nominated movies, I only watched one (Coco). And if I were to continue to be honest, I watch mainly for the red carpet fashion. But you already knew that! So without further ado…

Taraji P. Henson was one of the first actresses I saw on the red carpet tonight and I instantly loved her look. The Empire star was styled in a black custom Vera Wang gown. The tulle gown featured an extremely high front slit, but Taraji worked the red carpet like it was nothing. I also loved the sheer sleeve attachments. Gina Rodriguez sparkled in a nude Zuhair Murad gown. As soon as I saw this dress, it seemed so familiar to me and I still can’t shake that feeling. But nonetheless, this dress was gorgeous. I loved the low cut neckline, the silver embellishment, and the train. Zendaya will always appear on my “Looks I Love” series. She’s the fashion inspiration of her generation. Tonight, the Greatest Showman star kept it neutral in a brown Giambattista Valli Haute Couture dress. The chiffon dress showcased an off the shoulder look and she looked like a chic goddess. Margot Robbie was part of one of the biggest fashion trends of the night. Many actresses showed up in neutral colors, specifically white. The Best Actress nominee was stunning in a white Chanel dress. The off the shoulder dress featured some detail draped across the neckline before going off to form sleeves. The corset bodice clung perfectly to her, making her a vision in white. Emma Stone was absolutely stunning tonight. And she wasn’t even wearing a lavish gown. She went a complete 180 from last year’s golden and glamorous Givenchy gown. She walked the red carpet and presented in a Louis Vuitton pantsuit. She wore a maroon colored, satin blazer belted with pink. She kept it simple on the bottom with some black slacks and black heels. I liked how she went against the norm tonight. Emma’s one of those actresses that keeps it real. OOTD: Rompers & Denim 10.13.16

Hi all!

Since Fall started, I’ve been trying to dress a lot warmer with warmer colors. But like I mentioned before, Fall barely exists in SoCal. The weather’s slightly cooler than it was during the summer, but it’s still too hot for my taste.


When it’s hot, I like to wear rompers or shorts on my days off work. So for today’s OOTD post, I chose to wear my favorite summer romper from Target, which I actually bought last year on clearance, and paired it with my new denim vest.

I’ve been looking at denim jackets and they run pretty expensive, you know? What bugged me, was when I’d see a distressed denim jacket go for $50+. If I wanted a denim jacket with holes, I wouldn’t have thrown away the, what I thought was damaged, denim jacket I had. But that’s fashion.

Anyways, I’ve been eyeing this denim vest by Ava & Viv for months at Target. It came out on the floor for summer fashion and then went on clearance as the summer ended. You better believe I kept watching the clearance racks every time I stepped into Target. I told myself that if it’s still on the rack by the time it goes 75% off then it’s meant to be. What can I say? I’m here for the bargains.

Denim isn’t only for the summer, so this was a steal! Not only could I pair this vest with my romper, but I could pair it with an all black outfit with leggings and booties and boom! It can be a fall outfit!

Rewatch & Recap: The Secret Circle 1×02 “Bound”

Hi friends!

Did you think I was joking when I said I’d be recapping The Secret Circle each week? Last week, we saw the main heroine, Cassie Blake, go back to her roots in Chance Harbor. Five other teenagers revealed her connection to magic and left her in a state of shock. During high school, teenagers question their identity and the news of a “secret circle” confuses Cassie even more.

On episode two, the episode starts off with Cassie reading a letter from her deceased mother. She finds this letter in her family book, which showcases the history of their magic. She warns Cassie to be careful of who she trusts, especially because of the strong power she possesses. Her power is supposed to keep her safe from those trying to wrong her. At this point, siding with the rest of the circle is far from Cassie’s mind.

We’re then taken next door to Nick’s residence. He and Melissa are hooking up. Melissa pretends it’s just a hookup, but when Nick makes a douchebag comment, we can see it’s more than a hookup to her. As Melissa leaves, Nick sees Cassie again from his window. This time, Cassie tries to obstruct the view and goes a little overboard by breaking Nick’s window.

Faye’s grandfather, Henry, decides to pay a visit to his grand daughter and daughter-in-law. Faye looks like she absolutely adores him, but Dawn is clearly weary of his visit. Later on in the episode we find out that Ethan (Adam’s dad) called Henry after his little encounter with Charles Meade.

Throughout the episode, Sally Matthews, the class president, constantly tries to make Cassie feel welcome as the new student. At this point, she’s just a normal student without magical powers who constantly butts heads with Faye. While Sally invites Cassie to volunteer at the fair, Faye interrupts to bring up the topic of binding the circle yet again. Faye is still against it. And Cassie is still against all of it.

During Chemistry class, Faye provokes Cassie with some fun chemistry magic. Faye gets things boiling which causes Cassie’s glass beaker to break. Cassie’s pissed and ignites a fire before running out. Adam, the knight in shining armor, runs after her and offers to help her understand.

Diana’s pissed at Faye again after the stunt she pulled in class. The power struggle is real. Faye does NOT want to bind the circle, while Diana is standing her ground about binding the circle. Melissa is starting to lean towards Diana’s side of the spectrum, but Faye shut that down real quick.

We then see Cassie and Adam practicing their magic again. This time they play with electricity: battery –> Cassie –> Adam –>light bulb. Energy passes through them and Adam encourages Cassie to try herself. There’s too much energy and Cassie is scared of the connection she’s making with Adam again.

Cassie accepts Sally’s offer of normalcy and volunteers at the fair. Faye thinks it’s a perfect time to practice more magic. Winning fair games becomes so easy, but Henry catches her from afar. He reports this to his daughter-in-law who does a good job at acting like she has no idea and even offers to. Because of Henry’s suspicions, Dawn asks Charles to pass over the magic crystal so she can make sure another mess doesn’t happen.

Cassie and Ethan have another encounter. Like their past encounters, Ethan talks about Emilia and the energy and attraction they shared. Cassie knows exactly what he’s talking about because she feels the same thing with Adam. This scene is then followed by Adam and Cassie staring at the sunset.  Diana watches from afar and it’s almost heartbreaking, especially since Faye decides to be a brat and rub it in Diana’s face.

Fast forward to the night at the fair. Nick tries to make the moves on Faye while Melissa stands to the side. Faye would rather start another storm than hook up with Nick. While the storm is brewing,  Faye tries to provoke Cassie again. Sally attempts to save Cassie from Faye’s nonsense and Faye pushes the class president a little too hard. Her magical strength pushes Sally over the pier onto some rocks. The girl appears to be dead, but mama Chamberlain swoops in and discretely uses the crystal magic to resuscitate Sally. There is no way in hell she’s letting her daughter go away for killing another student. The incident with Sally is what pushes Faye to side with Diana’s request.

Henry saw Dawn use the crystal and finally puts it all together. He wants to stop the use of magic and possible binding of the circle and knows Dawn is involved with it somehow. He threatens to go to the Elders, but Dawn thinks the old man shouldn’t be around anymore. She induces a heart attack and tells Faye he’s at the lakehouse resting. It appears Charles and Dawn’s plans are going as planned.

Before the binding ceremony, Diana confesses that she’s nervous. She’s nervous about what happens after and what could happen between Adam and Cassie. Adam reassures Diana that he loves her, but Ethan’s “written in the stars” spiel is playing like a broken record in the back of my mind.

The final scene brings us to the beach. Diana leads in the chanting and questions, “Do you accept the circle?” The remaining 5 accept and the bonfire burns strongly. The circle is bound, now what are the parents up to?

OOTD: First day of Fall

San Diego doesn’t really do seasons. But even though it’s a warm sunny Friday, it’s officially the first day of Fall! It’s the time for pumpkin spice everything (basic) and busting out those fall booties you’ve been dying to take off the shoe rack. It’s time to ditch the light and bright clothing of the summer and fall (pun intended) into the warmer and darker clothing combinations.

Red is my favorite color, so naturally tints and shades of red are my favorite. Which is why I chose to go with burgundy and blush pink today.

I’m covered in Forever 21 from head to toe.  I bought the jacket at the beginning of the year and haven’t had much of a chance to wear it, so I decided why not pair it with these wine colored leggings. And of course I had to put on my favorite pair of booties! The reason I love Forever 21 is because they have a plus size section that’s stylish and affordable, especially for basics like leggings.

Rewatch & Recap: The Secret Circle – Pilot

On September 15, 2011, the Pilot episode of The Secret Circle aired. At that time, I hadn’t watched The Vampire Diaries, but from what I gathered, this show was sort of a spin-off about witches. However, it wasn’t really a spin-off. It was based off the book series by L.J. Smith, who wrote the TVD series. TSC also shared some of the same creators and producer.

But I was excited and watching for two reasons:

1. Shelley Hennig was starring in it. At the time, the former Miss Teen USA was mostly known for her role as Stephanie Johnson on Days of Our Lives and TSC was her first role after leaving the daytime soap opera. I’ve seen a few of the other actors work on previous shows, like Britt Robertson in Life Unexpected and Phoebe Tonkin in H20: Just Add Water

2. Witches and magic. There was so much hype around vampires with the Twilight series, other supernatural beings were being shunned away. And as a fan of Charmed, I was ready to see a new generation of witches kick butt and defeat evil.

Sadly, while the show was picked up for a full first season, it was not renewed by the CW. This was one of the show cancellations that I actually cried about. I became too attached. I dreamed I was part of the circle! Over one season we saw 5 characters, with all different personalities, work together because together they were more powerful. They had to fix the mess their parents put them in. Personalities clashed, relationships formed, and there was a power struggle between all of them. The main goal was to defeat the evil beings of the world together, all the while surviving the drama that is high school. And of course there were four bad-ass female characters.

And I’m still bummed about the cancellation. I signed the petitions and I was all over Twitter trying to help the show get picked up after such a cliffhanger of a finale. With the majority of the actors having shows ending soon, one can’t help but hope some revival or reunion comes through soon.

Luckily, the 1st and only season of TSC was on Netflix for a while. It was recently taken off, but just became available on the CW Seed. You can watch it online or on the app for free!

So if you’re up to watching an old show about some new witches, feel free to join me each week as I rewatch The Secret Circle. 

The Pilot episode begins with the main heroine, Cassie Blake (Britt Robertson). It’s a dark night and she’s driving down a long road towards home. That is until a mysterious car cuts her off and causes her to get a flat tire. It’s definitely not an accident when we see the car stall from afar before driving off. While Cassie calls her mother to inform her of the situation, the same car happens to pull up to their house. A little bit of magic here and there and Cassie’s mother and home go up in flames.

After the tragedy that ensued, Cassie is forced to live with her grandmother in a small town named Chance Harbor, where her mother grew up. She starts school at Chance Harbor High School and the first person she meets is Principal Dawn Chamberlain, her mother’s old friend.

We then are taken to two other students expecting the arrival of the young blonde, Cassie’s brooding neighbor, Nick Armstrong (Louis Hunter) and other brooder, Adam Conant (Thomas Dekker). When Adam first sees Cassie down the hall, you can feel the chemistry between the two forming. But Adam isn’t the first person to introduce themself to Cassie. Resident bad girl, Faye Chamberlain (Phoebe Tonkin), the Principal’s daughter, oozes out some sarcasm before “helping” Cassie open her locker.

Then Diana Meade (Shelley Hennig), Chance Harbor’s girl next door, comes into the picture. As the unofficial welcome committee, Diana invites Cassie to hang out at the Boathouse Grill after school. Before seeing Diana, she’s awkwardly approached by Adam’s father Ethan, who reminisces about his love for Cassie’s mother, Amelia. “It was written in the stars,” he says before Adam stops him from continuing.

When Adam leaves Cassie alone for a moment, Faye swoops in along with Melissa Glaser (Jessica Parker Kennedy). Melissa is sort of Faye’s sidekick. They continue on with the sarcasm which causes Cassie to leave. Melissa tells Faye, “I don’t think she knows,” and Faye decides to put Cassie through a magic test. This test includes setting Cassie’s car on fire while she’s locked in. Cassie fails,  but luckily Adam is there to use his powers to save her.

Diana’s a few minutes late to the epic event, but when she sees Faye she knows exactly what happened. During this scene, we find out that Diana and Adam are dating. The look of disappointment falls on Cassie’s face.

Remember when I talked about power struggles? Well here goes one with Faye and Diana. Diana’s almost like the leader of the circle. She wants to take it slow and does not want to risk being discovered. Faye on the other hand is loving all the magical energy and wants to use her powers, especially since she saw what Cassie’s energy did with the fire.

At home, it seems Cassie’s power has awoken. But she has no idea what is happening. The next morning she walks into town looking for her grandmother and bumps into a familiar face. At least he’s familiar to viewers. He was the man outside the Blake residence in the beginning of the episode. Turns out he’s Diana’s father, Charles Meade. It makes you wonder if Diana’s aware of what he did considering how nice she’s being to Cassie.

Cassie’s grandma seeks out Dawn Chamberlain and suspects that the kids are practicing after Cassie’s car caught on fire. Dawn’s feigns disbelief claiming that she knows the kids and what they do in their spare time. Practicing magic is not it.

But as we know, they are practicing. And when Cassie is suspicious of weird activity, Diana finally decides to introduce Cassie to the whole gang, aka the secret circle. They have a secret hideout in an abandoned house and it’s finally confirmed who’s in the circle: Faye, Melissa, Nick, and Adam. Cassie completes the circle of six and while Diana tries to lay it on her softly, Faye is blunt AF. “You’re a full blooded, 100% witch.”

Cassie thinks they’re all loony, which is completely understandable. Mr. Conant’s “written in the stars” comment is starting to make sense when the members of the circle explain the existence of each families’ books and the loss of a parent. But for proof, Adam convinces Cassie to chant, “A drop of water as light as air,” and again with their strong chemistry, they produce magic around them.

For a moment, Adam forgets he has a girlfriend. Cassie leaves in search for more answers from the people that knew her mother. She doesn’t get anywhere and appears to be convinced when Diana recalls what she knows about the last circle. 16 years ago there was an accident and all the people that died were members of the circle and happened to be their parents.

What’s more convincing is Faye putting her newfound power to the test again. This time she messes with mother nature and makes it rain. She’s on a high, that is until Diana interrupts and gets hurt. Faye can’t stop it on her own and Cassie intervenes. Faye’s little display for attention has convinced Cassie…convinced her that she doesn’t want to be involved with any of them.

Charles Meade continues to be sketchy. He visits Adam’s dad and gives him a warning to shut his mouth after seeing him speak to Cassie earlier that night. If witchcraft was banned since the last circle, how does Charles have magic?! In a major plot twist, Dawn and Charles are in cahoots with each other. They planned for Cassie to come to town and everything is going as expected.

The episode ends with Cassie finding her families’ book and a letter from her Mother. Looks like Cassie might be siding on Diana with this one.

Now Watching: The Bold Type, Season 1 Review

It’s been a week since The Bold Type season one finale aired and I’m going through withdrawals! With Pretty Little Liars over and done, I needed to fill my Tuesday night show void and feel young again. I am young, what am I talking about?

On July 11th, The Bold Type premiered on Freeform fka ABC Family. I had seen ads on the network and wanted to support one of my favorite actresses in young hollywood, Katie Stevens. From what I could tell, the premise of the show: three twenty something year old women trying to juggle relationships, their careers, and life as a millennial while working together at one of the top magazines, Scarlet. One of the tag lines was “I’m not a boss bitch. I’m a boss, bitch.” If that doesn’t scream badass, I don’t what does. It wasn’t hard to convince me that this would be a show I’d like.

The Pilot episode gave us a glimpse of the trio of strong women and what relevant issues they’d be tackling head on.

First we have Jane Sloan, played by Katie Stevens. Jane is the bright eyed writer of the trio. Like her best friends, she started as an assistant and was recently promoted to “writer” at Scarlet Magazine. It’s her dream job as she often reminisces about being “a young girl in Colorado reading Scarlet magazine in my closet.” But things get a little hectic and intimidating when Scarlet’s head honcho, Jacqueline Carlyle (Melora Hardin), constantly pushes her to think outside of the box and get out of her comfort zone. In the first episode, we see Jane second guessing herself and reluctant to revisit her past for a piece, but Jacqueline doesn’t take no for an answer.

Sutton Brady (Meghann Fahy) is the one among the three that’s still slaving away as an assistant. It’s what she’s known for the past 4 years. She’s comfortable, but longs for a lot more than sitting at the front desk of Lauren Park’s office. And it sounds ever so familiar to me. Seeing her best friends move up the ranks while she stays behind is a little disheartening for her.The most out of routine thing in her life is her secret relationship with an older guy, Richard Hunter (Sam Page). Their relationship is a bit taboo as Richard is Scarlet’s legal advisor and a board member. While Sutton makes Richard feel younger, Richard supports Sutton’s endeavors to leave the assistant desk. Later on in the season, she leave’s Lauren’s assistant desk for Oliver’s assistant’s desk. But at least it’s in something she’s passionate about – fashion.

Kat Edison (Aisha Dee) rounds out the trio. After 2 years of being an assistant, Kat became involved with the social media team at Scarlet and was recently promoted to Social Media Director. When we first meet her in the Pilot episode, you could tell she is very outspoken and confident. She speaks/does things before she thinks. Things change a little when she meets Adena (Nikohl Boosheri), a Muslim lesbian, who is also very outspoken. After spending some time with Adena, everything she thought she knew about certain things went down the drain. Many times we see her deem herself as the one who doesn’t do relationships, but she becomes immersed into one. Her relationship with Adena sparks a lot of spontaneity.

The trio gets a lot of support from other Scarlet personnel. We have Alex (Matt Ward) who I think is that honorary best friend to all of the young women. He’s Jane’s wing man, Kat’s voice of reason, & Sutton’s not-so-secret admirer who is ultimately friendzoned in the end. There’s Richard who always seems to put in a good word for Sutton. However, when he meets with Kat and Jane, I think he realizes that he doesn’t quite fit in their world. There’s also Jacqueline, whom I mentioned earlier. She’s the head boss at Scarlet magazine and is definitely a motherly figure to the three young women. She helps them when in need and is understanding to their feelings, but knows when to put her hand down. She’s just not a boss to them, she’s a mentor who was once in their shoes.

The Bold Type has covered topics from feminism to politics to sexuality to social media, etc. In one episode, Jane is assigned the sex column and has to write about orgasms. Having never experienced one, she has to get very familiar with herself and ends up getting familiar with Ryan (Dan Jeannotte) aka Pinstripe. They inspire each other in more ways than one, but later on in the season Jane wants more in their relationship.

In another episode, they cover breast cancer awareness. As a twenty something year old, I think it’s not something I’m too familiar with or open to discussing. But The Bold Type gave us that perspective and put me in an emotional roller coaster ride as we learned more about Jane and her mother. During this episode, Kat and Sutton were also there for Jane knowing that it was a sensitive topic. They are friendship goals. Everyone needs a squad with a Jane, Sutton, and Kat.

The finale episode covered the topic of rape, which isn’t an easy topic to talk about. Jane decides to shine a spotlight on an activist who was a victim of rape. She goes head to head with Jacqueline on how to approach and understand the person of interest. The finale scene of this episode reveals something about Jacqueline, but it’s so full of hope, positivity, and support.

For me though, I think the recurring topic that rung to me as a viewer, was the feeling of not being challenged and getting out of your comfort zone, as I mentioned before. I graduated from college 6 years ago. I’m sure you can imagine how “stuck” I feel. At the end of the season, Jane is faced with choosing between what she’s known for years or starting with something new that could possibly (or not) be good for her career. Kat has this responsibility with Scarlet as the Social Media Director, but Adena has inspired her to see the world and leave it all behind. Then there’s Sutton. She was the assistant that was left behind, but her drive and passion for fashion got her one step closer to her dream. She wasn’t challenged anymore and she did something about it even though she had no fashion experience on her resume.

Another recurring thing that stood out to me was their meeting place. Throughout the season, we see the trio face obstacles together and often see them talking things out in a safe/neutral place, the fashion closet. The fashion closet housed many celebrations, freak outs, and of course fashion emergencies. The moments in the fashion closet were my favorite. I wish I had a place like the fashion closet to escape to at my job.

Speaking of fashion, the fashion on the show is on point. The cast of The Bold Type definitely rock their outfits confidently and I would love to raid their closets.

This review does not do The Bold Type any justice, but I highly recommend you binge watch this show if you’re looking for inspiration.

As far as I know, Freeform has yet to renew the show, but they should! Obviously, it’s very far from what Pretty Little Liars was, but if this is the direction that Freeform is going in, I’m not complaining.
