Til deAth do us pArt. (PLL Series Finale Recap)

It’s over, it’s finally over. This is it. My last PLL recap and it’s so bittersweet.

The episode begins with a fantasy. We’re taken in Mona’s head where the girls talk about missing A.D. “Without fear, there cannot be courage,” dream Spencer reminisces and it’s definitely a true statement. But her daydream is quickly interrupted when a mystery person decides to visit her at the hospital.

One year later…everyone seems like they are finally happy and A.D. free. But the game is not over.

As I started writing this recap, it started to get super long considering we had a 2 hour finale! So with a change of heart, I’ve decided to do Top 5 moments.

5 Our couples get a happy ending. This isn’t really one moment, but it’s how each of the end game couples ended up together.

The first couple we see after the time jump is Ezria. They are at the Warner Bros lot with Ezra and Aria. It kind of seems like they’re going the route The Hills took, where they reveal they are on a set implying it was all fake. I would have died if that happened. But nope, it just turns out that their book is being adapted into film. Rainer and Paige should star! Kudos if you get the reference.

The majority of the episode revolves around the Ezria wedding. Aria gets cold feet because she learns that she won’t be able to have a child, but Ezra’s there for her every step of the way. On their actual wedding day, Ezra’s a no show, but not on his own will. But in the end, they make it together.

Emison had twins, Lily and Grace! Alison seems to be on edge sneaking around, but she’s just meeting with Emily’s mom. We don’t get much from their first meeting, but obviously it’s about Emison’s future and Pam seems to give Ali her blessing. Usually we see Emily reassuring Alison, but this episode was very much about Alison and her love for Emily.

Later in the episode, Emily is angry at Alison for hiding a secret, but it turns out Alison was planning a proposal. Alison didn’t plan for it to happen due to an argument, but it gave the Emison fans lots of feels with the pug sweatshirt.

We then have Haleb, the recently married couple. In the last episode, we saw the two tie the knot in a small ceremony. It’s not the wedding anyone really pictured for Hanna, and this episode it seems to be what’s on Hanna’s mind as well. But that’s only because the two are not on the same page when it comes to Mona.

While Hanna has a baby on her mind, Caleb has Mona living in their loft on his mind and they are not happy thoughts. Spencer also happened to interfere, when she calls out the tension to Hanna. Later on, things get better and Hanna gets exactly what she wishes for, a baby.

Then comes Spoby. Toby finds his way back to Rosewood and immediately connects with Spencer. While everyone is off doing couple things, in an ode to past Spoby moments, they play Scrabble. Spencer wins of course, with the word “limerance” alluding to some kind of unrequited love. Toby loves you, don’t you ever doubt that Spencer.

Without saying too much, there is some unrequited love with Toby. But Toby knows the real Spencer and chooses her.

4 Addison is a brat. I literally cannot with her. We saw her in one episode and then she comes back like she owns the high school. She’s the current bully and it makes me wonder how effed up her family tree must be. I absolutely despise people who disrespect their teachers. Addison knows and cares too much about Alison and her friends. Also, the fact that Jenna also dislikes her says a lot. “I may not be able to see, but I can smell a bitch from a mile away,” such a burn.

The girls constantly ask Addison’s “friends” if she’s bullying them and you can just see the fear in their eyes. In the final scenes, history repeats itself when Addison goes missing. I didn’t even dislike Alison this much.

3 Mona is a minion again. Just when we all thought Mona was going to get the help she needed, once she was released, A.D. reeled her back in again. She causes a rift between Hanna and Caleb, when Hanna is just trying to be a good friend. As Mona’s former best friend, who happened to bring her back to gaming, Hanna feels a responsibility to take care of Mona. She practically forgives her for everything. But you should never trust a pretty girl with an ugly secret.

In a mask disguised as Melissa, Mona spies on the girls and their significant others. She attempts to gain A.D.’s trust by spying on their every move and even knocks Spencer out, just like she did in the season 2 finale, “UnmAsked”. No matter how much intel Mona gets, A.D. is still very hesitant to reveal their identity. Later on, Mona beats A.D. at their own game. It’s interesting because later on we see who’s side she was really on.

2 A.D. is finally revealed. A little after the first hour, A.D. is finally revealed after they get Mona to ambush Spencer. Spencer wakes up in a room thinking she’s looking into a mirror, but it’s actually her twin, Alex Drake. Turns out Mary Drake had a second baby that no one knew about. The doctor put Alex up for adoption and promised not to say a word for money. Alex then grew up in London, but it was not the environment she or Mary Drake had hoped for. She never felt the love she yearned for.

That is until she met Wren, who mistakes her for Spencer. They fall in love and clearly Wren has a type. Blinded by love, Wren tells Alex everything, and she’s intrigued by Spencer’s life and Cece’s game for the girls and continuing the legacy. Turns out that Hanna’s dream of Spencer, was actually Alex.

Her love for Cece  and avenging her death spurred her on to keep the game going. She made sure to put on the best show of her life, asking Wren to shoot her, just to match Spencer’s shot wound from Jenna.

At Aria’s wedding, Alex whispers under her breath and reveals that Wren is the baby daddy. The sad thing is that Wren didn’t get the chance to meet the babies as it’s implied that Alex killed him. Why kill the man that loves you and is willing to sacrifice everything for the guy who doesn’t even know you exist and is actually in love with your twin sister?!

Alex even helps Mary Drake escape so they can all be one big happy family, at least in Alex’s little made up world. So not only does she have Spencer, she has Mary Drake and even decides to kidnap Ezra because he was seen as a threat.

However, her plans are squashed when Jenna has a little encounter with her outside the Hastings’ law firm, posing as Spencer. Jenna can smell a bitch from a mile a way, and this bitch smelled like A.D. She calls Toby and he realizes he slept with the wrong twin. The signs are there when Spencer’s horse, Bashful, isn’t so sweet with Alex and the book he received from “Spencer” is not the same book he’s seen the real Spencer with.

Mona knows the scooby gang is on to Alex and it looks like she calls A.D. for help. But it’s all for show as she betrays Alex. She reveals her true plans to the scooby gang and they are able to ambush the house Toby built, finding the upgraded doll house. As the twins fight to the death, they enter and Toby pulls out his gone. He ultimately has to choose and he chooses correctly when Alex answers a question incorrectly. Alex’s final words as a copy takes her away: “Well, no one can call you ‘loser Mona’ anymore.” And just like that Mona ultimately won.

1 Which then takes us to the final scenes. The Ezria wedding finally happens, in the Rosewood Church. They say their vows and I’m on the verge of crying. But when the priest calls out if anyone objects, a phone rings and I almost have a heart attack. The whole audience does because after 7 years, a ringtone has caused a lot of trauma. Luckily, the videographer, played by Marlene King, just forgot to silence her phone. I love that after all the drama, they kept it light and funny.

After the wedding came the honeymoon talk and goodbyes. This was the last scene the girls filmed and my heart had so many feels to see all of them happy. Aria is only leaving for 3 weeks, and WE ARE ALL EMOTIONAL WRECKS. Alison hits it right on the spot when she says, “For some reason, this feels like it’s the end of something.”

On the other side of the world, Mona gets her happy ending with a new boy toy, whom I believe was the cop that took Alex away. She works at a doll shop, but the big toys are in the back when it’s revealed that she has Mary Drake and Alex held hostage during tea time. Mona is the best. That is all.

The FINAL scene takes us back to the pilot with a group of girls at a sleepover. They wake up to find that Addison is missing and history is about to repeat itself.

A part of me is really pissed about the big A.D. reveal. Spencer has a twin and we’re all supposed to believe that absolutely no one knew about her. But I guess they are all good at keeping secrets anyways. But I still enjoyed the execution and the way they made it work. The finale was an ode to the fans that have been there since the Pilot and I’m happy to have been part of the PLL army.

I’m happy because my little liars are finally happy. #GameOver

Anyways, stay tuned for my farewell post to PLL in the next few days. It’s been a long ride, but we’ve finally reached the destination.

xoxo,

Adele
