The episode began right where last week ended, at the crime scene. Among the crowd, Ava was devastated at the sight of her (ex) boyfriend. Her two fake friends, Dylan and Caitlin, tried to approach her, but she wanted nothing to do with them. Nolan’s demise hit every detail of Caitlin’s vision, so I understand Ava.
Three days later, we find Ava sulking, Dylan having nightmares, and Caitlin on a diet. However, both Caitlin and Dylan have significant others to lean on, while Ava doesn’t seem to have anyone, but a bottle of jack.
Ali is on a mission to figure out who left that message on her wall. Her repair call is cut short when she receives a message from Nolan to meet him on the roof of Thorne hall. Clearly, someone is trying to frame her/freak her out – unless the dead can text now.
Ali teams up with Mona to figure out what happened. Mona is in “beautiful mind” mode as she tries to figure out who snapped – something about allowing Nolan to go to BHU even though his profile didn’t meet her algorithms and had red flags. Ali slaps the equation out of Mona and everything becomes about key lime pie. Mona is creeping me out, but I love how she calls Ali out to quit trying to be something she isn’t.
Dylan and Caitlin think it’s finally time to confront Ava and convince her that they had nothing to do with Nolan’s murder. Ava is hesitant, but she plays along for Nolan’s funeral. They’re the perfect posse grieving their fearless leader. Also, it was quite a fashionable funeral.
A new character comes into play, Nolan’s childhood best friend and Caitlin’s ex, Mason. Mason reminisces about the past and then offers to be an alibi for Caitlin. This comes out of nowhere! While the two converse, Dylan tries to find Nolan’s stash of secrets, but only meets a letter. Someone beat him and his newfound friends to it.
The three perfectionists show up to Nolan’s vigil and talk like no one’s listening. Someone chimes in, “It’s just like how you imagined it.” If I learned one thing from PLL, it’s that you can’t trust anyone as there are eyes and ears everywhere.
As Alison prepares to return to school, an unexpected visitor shows up at her home – Claire Hotchkiss. After losing her son, she felt like being close to her daughter by breaking into her old home. Claire reveals how close Taylor and Nolan were and even gives Ali some advice,”You’re a survivor Alison, at all costs. That’s what you need to teach them.” Claire definitely knows more than she’s letting on.
After Mona’s breakdown and change in personality throughout the episode, we get to see her open up, or at least try to. PLL fans would probably enjoy the 2nd to last scene because we see Mona call Hanna and reveal that Haleb has a baby. But that’s not the only bombshell – Spoby eloped. My heart soared!
In the last scene, it’s the first day back to school and the investigation continues. Ava seems to break down her walls to let Dylan and Caitlin in, but things go south when the three are pulled from class by the new head of security, Dana Booker. She asks where they were the night of Nolan’s murder and Ali saves the day. Security was turned off around her home that night so she had the perfect alibi. I guess you can say she’s still a pretty little liar. “Bring it on, bitch.”
TLDR: Someone really had it out for Nolan and his perfect posse. Dylan and Caitlin start becoming real friends, while Ava has trust issues. Ali lies to save her and her students, while Mona likes key lime pie and equations.
